Interview with Hilary, Product Designer
INSPIRATION & ORIGIN:
What inspired the creation of the product(s)/collection?
Inspired by antique block printed textiles from India.
Are there artists, designers, shapes, or geographical locations that played a role in shaping the product(s)/collection?
The Raffi quilt patterns were hand-designed by our team at Shoppe. We partnered with a team in India who printed the patterns on high-quality fabrics
What is the overall narrative / what are the key descriptors and messages of the product(s)/collection?
Elevated floral motifs inspired by antique textiles.
CRAFTSMANSHIP:
Could you share insights into the craftsmanship techniques employed in making the product(s)/collection?
These quilts are hand stitched by expert artisans in India.
DESIGN EVOLUTION:
How did the design of these pieces evolve from the initial concept to the final product(s)/collection?
The textile design process can be described with one word: iteration. A pattern is reworked several times before it reaches a point of locking in a strong repeating motif.
Were there any unexpected challenges or breakthroughs during the design process for the product(s)/collection?
Executing the look of an antique textile is no small feat. There was a lot of innovation in creating texture and distressing within our artwork to give it a sun-worn, aged look.
